Introduction to sea kayaking

We will start by getting into the kayaks on the grass! This gives you a chance to get used to the kayak and equipment. We will talk briefly about the differences between general purpose kayaks and sea kayaks and look at the other equipment you need. We will adjust the kayaks and run through a short safety briefing.

Then we will choose an interesting and beautiful location. Maybe we will go to Seil Sound or Loch Etive. If conditions are not too good we can go to Loch Awe and get the  feel of sea kayaking but in a sheltered and tide free location. If you are staying somewhere on the coast and it is suitable, then we can come to you.

The first hour or so will be spent in a sheltered location, teaching you the basic skills. Then we will go for a short tour, getting the feel for the kayaks, learning sea specific techniques and talking about navigation, tides and currents. We will probably stop for a leg stretch and a snack on a rocky island. We will probably finish off with a demonstration deep water rescue, but only if you want to.

You will not be "made to capsize" but if it happens anyway (it does occasionally) you will already know what to do and we will be there to make sure that you come to no harm.

For these trips, we usually start about 10:00 and finish about 16:30. depending on tides, weather and how keen you are. Evening sessions can be arranged

Equipment

We have a range of kayaks available to suit you. Wilderness Systems Tempests, (Both the 170 and the 165 for smaller paddlers) Valley Avocet, P&H Capella and Scorpio. For 2009 we will have two new Northshore Atlantics. We also have huge range of paddle sizes and designs so that you can find out which is best for you.

All of our kayaks have "skegs" which help you to maintain a straight course in the early stages.

Seafreedom provides the kayak, the paddle, a spray deck, buoyancy aid (PFD), paddling jacket, neoprene wet boots and essential safety equipment. We will also provide hot drinks.

You will need to bring two layers of thermal top or fleece and something like track suit trousers or shorts. And of course a picnic.

Full information will be provided when you book.
