British Canoe Union / Scottish Canoe Association Star tests
We encourage clients to work their way through the BCU/SCA award system.
The main advantage of achieving the Star test awards is that it calibrates your kayaking ability. You know just where you are in terms of kayaking skill and knowledge will easily be able to give other coaches and centres a clear understanding of your ability. It will help you to choose courses and holidays. And it is satisfying to have your progress formally recognised. We get a lot of satisfaction from seeing our clients progress through the system.
For more information about the Star tests, have a look at the information on the BCU website
The Seafreedom coaching program is very similar to the Star test syllabus, but there are some differences. If you would like to do the Star tests, just let us know and we will make sure that we cover the complete syllabus for you.
We can carry out the tests and award certificates up to 3 Star and can train and arrange assessments for 4 Star.
BCU 2 Star
The 2 star covers the basic skill set for paddling canoes and kayaks. It is an excellent foundation for further development and is the essential qualification for anyone wanting to enter the BCU coach training scheme. It's huge fun to do. For people with several days experience, two days is usually enough for training and assessment, but there is a lot of content, so if you are fairly new to kayaking/canoeing we recommend at least 3 days. Our fleet now includes canoes, which we bought specifically for this program. Click here for the syllabus
BCU 3 Star Sea
This award is a worthwhile aspiration for all would-be sea kayakers. Pass it, and you know that you have reached a significant milestone in your development. The syllabus covers the foundations of sea kayak competence.
We can coach you in all aspects of the award and then, when you are ready, carry out the assessment to BCU/SCA standards. Click here for details of the syllabus
BCU 4 Star Sea Leader
The 4 star is the first rung on the leader awards. It is the essential qualification for experienced paddlers who want to lead others, whether in a club or a commercial context. Seafreedom offer the "official" BCU 4 star training course and assessment by arrangement. We also provide individualized coaching to help you bridge the gap between the BCU training and the assessment requirement. We had a lot of success in the last two years in helping people to prepare and to polish their skill for assessment. We don't carry out the 4 star assessments ourselves. Instead we bring in external examiners that we know. syllabus
Do you want to become an expert paddler? If so, come and paddle with Seafreedom. We have advanced conditions right on our door step and decades of experience to pass on. If you want to achieve a 5 Star certificate, you will need to attend a two day training course and an assessment at a BCU/SCA contracted centre. However, many people benefit from individualized coaching to prepare them for the assessment. Contact us to talk over your requirements. syllabus
